You Are More

This is the road our rental vacation house is on. To be perfectly honest, the actual place means nothing to me… But it’s the people inside that house, the people I’m sharing this week with, that make it so incredibly special. My mom, her boyfriend, his son and daughter, and my little sister. Why are these people so crazy important to me? It’s just about impossible to put into words. My father, when I was eight years old, had a cardiac arrest. They were able to keep him alive, but by the time he woke up from weeks in a coma, his memory was almost completely wiped. He couldn’t remember my mom, my sister, his parents… me. And it’s taken me until fairly recently to realize that this new man, my mom’s boyfriend, isn’t trying to replace my dad. My bitterness toward him lasted almost four years. Thankfully, he and his kids put up with my hostility until I warmed up to them… And now, I can’t imagine what it would be like without them with us. When the six of us are together… We could be anywhere in the world, and it will always be special.
